Kristen Stewart Explains Why She Didn’t Cast Herself in Her Short Directorial Debut, ‘Come Swim’

With her short debut, the longtime actress is beginning to realize her dream of becoming a filmmaker in her own right — which often means letting go of material by casting outside herself.

Kristen Stewart’s second act isn’t just in the works, it’s here. The long-time actress — at age 27, she’s already been acting professionally for more than half her life — initially dreamed of being a filmmaker, a desire she’s lately been putting into practice through short-form directorial opportunities, including a Chvrches music video and her directorial film debut, the short “Come Swim.” The film bowed earlier this year at Sundance, before going on to screen at Cannes and, most recently, a slot as part of Sundance’s traveling Short Film Tour.

Produced as part of Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology — a collection of short films all made by women, and of every stripe, from well-known names like Stewart to rising stars like Courtney Hoffman — the film’s short synopsis bills it as “a diptych of one man’s day; half impressionist and half realist portraits.” Part dreamy (and often unnerving) fable, part hard-won drama, the film hinges both on its formal elements, including editing by Jacob Secher Schulsinger (Ruben Ostlund’s regular collaborator, Stewart herself is a huge fan of their “Force Majeure”) and sound design by Matt Vowles, along with a stunning turn from star Josh Kaye, a first-time actor.

At the film’s New York premiere, held last night at the Museum of Modern Art as part of their Future Imperfect sci-fi series, Stewart explained why she choose to cast a newbie like Kaye in such a demanding role. Turns out, she initially toyed with casting herself in the part.

Early in the process, Stewart approached a few other actors, before settling on Kaye. “I kind of propositioned a couple actors that I knew who were busy, and ultimately I was like, ‘Either I’ll do it myself or I’ll hire someone who is just like a buddy.’ Looking back on it, it was probably like the most fruitful relationship I had the whole time. I’m really happy [that’s] how it happened to fall out.”

She added, “I didn’t want like an ‘actor boy’ to do [the part], and I couldn’t jump on it myself, because I really was looking for a transference of energy. I wanted to give someone something and see what they could do with it, not just do it myself, even though I wanted to so badly. I recognized a sameness, like a willingness. He’s so fucking talented, it’s crazy. He’s never done anything, and he’s just a friend of mine.”

When asked if she had ever considered letting another actress play the lead role, and if she was at all stuck on the gender of the part, Stewart explained, “To be honest, to me, there was absolutely no difference between– he could have been a girl, it doesn’t matter.”

Last October at the New York Film Festival, Stewart’s excitement about the next stage of her career was obvious. “That is the most satisfying thing I have ever done,” she said. “As an actor, you’re like a little thing that can help everyone feel this, but when it comes from you — it’s like validation in the most ultimate. You’re not alone. Like, ‘I see you, girl. I see you, and I get it.’ It’s like, ‘Yes!’

Stewart’s passion for film-making isn’t wavering, either. At Cannes, she told our Anne Thompson that she was continuing to develop material for herself to direct, and at last night’s premiere, she shyly told the crowd she’s in the process of wooing an author whose work she is eager to adapt into her first feature.

Ann Thompson จาก Indie Wire  สัมภาษณ์ ผู้กำกับ Kristen Stewart เรื่อง Come Swim ที่ Cannes 2017

The star supports more women behind the camera in Hollywood, and looks forward to more directing.

Kristen Stewart Is Now a Director, and Speaks For Herself: ‘Ask Me Anything!’

The actress made her fourth trek to Cannes with her directing debut, short “Come Swim.”

She wants to do it again.

When Kristen Stewart goes to Cannes, she’s usually promoting a movie directed by someone else — like Olivier Assayas’ “Personal Shopper,” which debuted on the Riviera last year. The actress’s Cannes anxiety usually derives from wanting to represent her director correctly, to get out the right message. But this year’s different.

“I’m not working for anyone but myself,” she says, beaming. “Ask me anything!”

Stewart came to Cannes this year as the director of her first short, the 17-minute “Come Swim.” She and her producers at Starlight Studios pitched the film to women’s website Refinery29, which also backed her chum Chloe Sevigne’s short “Kitty: The Movie.” They helped Stewart to develop her rough outline, in which she described an image of a giant wave “getting bigger and bigger” that “never breaks.” Stewart already knew just the Australian underwater photographer to shoot it. Indeed, the film’s opening shot is a stunner.

The actress has been wanting to make movies since she was 10 years old, watching her show-business parents put in 16-hour days. Actress-director Jodie Foster, her co-star in David Fincher’s “Panic Room,” was surprised it took Stewart so long to take the directing helm. “You seemed like someone who wants to make something,” she told her recently.

Indeed she did. Stewart rallied her crew and cast (led by rookie Josh Kaye) around her pearl of an idea for an experimental, impressionistic essay on fear and water. They moved from asking her what she needed to becoming enthusiastic collaborators. “I’m a control freak,” she said. “I hate something I can’t wrestle down.” But on set, she got a kick out of watching her team get excited. “I saw them switch on,” she said. “I planted that seed!”

She was afraid that filming might present a question that she did not know how to answer. “I never ran into that wall,” she said. “It informed itself every day. It was like excavating this pearl and everyone could see it. I knew where we were going to be at any given moment.”

Like her Cannes sisters Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, and Isabelle Huppert, Stewart enthusiastically supports encouraging more women directors like Kelly Reichardt (“Certain Women”). “Nobody can tell the stories she tells,” said Stewart.

And she’d rather talk about her films than many of the silly questions that come her way. “Anything that takes focus away from the work is usually media and money,” she said.

While Stewart is developing material for herself to direct, she has no interest in taking on the arduous job of producing; she’d rather let someone else help her to realize her goals as a director and actress.

Since Stewart debuted Come Swim at Sundance, she has already directed a Chvrches music video, and wants to turn political for a short about gun control. As an actress, she’s wrapped indie biopic “Lizzie,” in which she stars as 19th-century murderess Lizzie Borden; action feature “Underwater” (Twentieth Century Fox); and is now prepping her role as Savannah Knoop in Justin Kelly’s movie about the infamous fictional persona JT Leroy, opposite Laura Dern as writer and con artist Laura Albert.

At a Cinema Francais dinner, I asked Juliette Binoche if she’d like to join Stewart on another Assayas film. “Of course!” she replied. Stewart says they just have to wait to see what Assayas dreams up for them.

Kristen’s Interview with ‘Women in Hollywood’ in Cannes #ComeSwim

Kristen Stewart is crafting a great career for herself. She shot to international stardom in “Twilight,” but it’s what she’s done after the vampire romance franchise that really makes her stand out. Instead of gravitating towards blockbusters or Oscar bait, she’s signed on to interesting indie projects and delivered standout performances in films like Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women” and Oliver Assayas’s “Personal Shopper” and “The Clouds of Sils Maria.” And now she’s getting into directing. She’s at Cannes screening her new short, “Come Swim.”

I spoke with Stewart about when she decided to step behind the camera, what she looks for in a project, and why she thinks directing should never be about correcting.

“Come Swim” made its world premiere at Sundance in January and debuted at Cannes May 20.
